What is Matted hair?

In simple terms, matted hair is when the shed hair strands are combined with the ones on our head. The end result is that they twist together, forming clumps of knotted tangles. It is sort of similar to the hair mats condition that is often found in dogs.

There are numerous reasons why you end up having matted hair. Some of them include detangling your hair in the wrong way, not having regular haircuts, styling your hair without combing well, sleeping with hair let loose and so on. Even the hair products that you use If you are a curly-headed person, then there is more chance for you to get matter hair problems.

If this brings you some relief, you need not chop your hair off to solve this problem. I would suggest avoiding the use of hair softeners and WD-40 for your hair as it damages your hair. Instead by using the right tools in the correct technique can result in detangled hair. You just need a little bit of patience to get there!

How to Detangle matted hair?

Let us understand how to detangle matted hair step by step.

Step 1 – Saturate your hair strands

This is the most crucial step for detangling your hair. Because your hair is rough and intertwined with each other, which makes it extremely difficult to comb through when it is dry and without any moisture. Ensure that you apply sufficient conditions to all the entangled parts so that it is easier to separate the entangled strands. For this process, you can either use a hair detangler or a moisturizing condition.

Step 2 – Loosen your hair strands

Loosen your hair strands
The next step involved loosening/ entangling each knotted hair strand. Since it is already conditioned, using a wide-tooth comb becomes effective. While combing your hair, always start at the end, never the root. Take your time and slowly work your way up to the root.

You might notice that there is a lot of hair falling out (more than the usual), but you needn’t worry as this is the shed hair tangled with the hair on your head. So, unless you pull your hair too much while combing, you need not worry about new hair falling out.

Step 3 – Rinse

Hair Rinse

Before you do the final step, run your finger through your hair. If you cannot smoothly run your fingers through it, untangle the strands slowly using a wide-tooth comb. However, if it runs smooth, then you can move on to the rinsing step. Repeat the first step once you have combed throughout your hair with a comb.

While rinsing, always use cold water since hot water can damage your hair follicles. If you cannot handle the cold water, switch to lukewarm water but don’t stand under the shower for long. Rinsing your hair also ensure the conditioner applied to your hair is also rinsed away.

How to prevent matted hair?

Well, now you know how to untangle matted hair! You would have understood how difficult this is, so it is best not to go through this tedious task again. For this, you need to have a proper hair care routine. Some of which includes –

1. Comb your hair regularly

Comb your hair from the end to the root, and make sure you do this every day when you wake up and go to bed. Do this with a wide-tooth comb and your fingers whenever necessary.

2. Use detangling products

After you wash your hair with organic shampoo, apply conditioner or any other detangler. This is done to reduce frizz and fiction, which are the main causes of our hair matting. While using a conditioner, apply only on your hair ends and not the root. Also, let the condition stay for two or three minutes before you wash it off.

3. Protect hair during your sleep

When you toss and turn in your sleep, your hair tends to get tangled together. To avoid this, put your hair in a silk scarf or tie your hair in a loose ponytail, preferably a high one.

4. Regular trims

Split ends tend to damage your hair and make each strand thin. It also gives off a very ragged and rough look and feels. This can also result in matted hair, so regular trims are required to get rid of split ends.

5. Chemical treatments

Chemical treatments like bleaching and other hair sprays can cause severe damage to your hair since they dry out the moisture in your hair. Your hair shaft tends to be weaker when you do a lot of chemical treatments.
