Fish oil is one of the best sources of polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acids, and most of its benefits come from the omega 3 fatty acid. This fatty acid has numerous benefits like improving eye health, fighting depression and anxiety, cardiovascular benefits, reducing inflammation, improving bone health, etc.

Some of the best omega 3 capsules in India are WOW Omega-3 Capsules, TrueBasics Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules, Naturyz Triple Strength Omega 3 Fish Oil, etc.

In this article, we will be discussing more fish oil capsules, their benefits, side effects, and so on.

What Is Fish Oil?

Fish Oil

As mentioned before, fish oil is one of the best sources of polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acids. It contains two important types of omega-3 fatty acids – docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). We get fish oil from different kinds of fish, but mainly they choose ones rich in fat like mackerel, herring, tuna, trout, crabs, oyster, and salmon.

Our bodies cannot manufacture omega 3 fatty acids, so we consume fish oil supplements or prescription fish oils. The former contains roughly 30-50% omega 3, while the latter has 90% omega 3 fatty acids. It does not contain the same amount of fish oil, so do not substitute one for the other.

How To Take Fish Oil Capsules?

It is always best to consume fish as such without having it as supplements or prescriptions. If you do not want to consume the capsule in one go, you can split the dose and have it at a different time during the day. On a general note, consuming fish oil capsules does not have many side effects and has little to no mercury content compared to normal broiled, baked or fried fish.

So, we need not worry about mercury and its adverse effects, but just like everything else, consuming too much fish oil can be dangerous for you. It can lead to mild side effects like bad breath, headache, heartburn, nausea, diarrhoea, rash, and some major ones like intense bleeding, a higher risk for stroke, and disrupting your immune responses.

Consume only the amount prescribed by your doctor of the amount given on the label; under no circumstance take an overdose of the supplement. It is best to consult a doctor before you consume fish oil capsules, especially if you take other medications or have problems like diabetes, liver disease, pancreas disorder, and an underactive thyroid.

While consuming fish oil supplements, kindly avoid the following as it can cause serious side effects –

  1.  Anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs, herbs, and supplements– These supplements reduce the body’s ability to clot blood, thus more risk of heavy bleeding.
  2.  Blood pressure drugs, herbs, and supplements– When consumed together, there is a high chance that the blood pressure will increase.
  3.  Contraceptive drugs –This can interfere with the functioning of fish oil capsules as well.
  4.  Orlistat (Xenical, Alli)– This is a drug prescribed for weight loss, but when consumed with fish oil, our body cannot absorb the fatty acids, and hence consuming the fish oil supplement becomes useless.
  5.  Vitamin E –Combining this can also result in your blood thinning which might increase the risk of heavy bleeding if you are wounded.

Other drugs like atenolol, carvedilol, labetalol, chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, etc., have a negative effect when combined with fish oil capsules. Hence you must consult a doctor before taking fish oil supplements.
