We live in a world where obesity is a much more significant health issue than being underweight. Until you are skinny, you can’t feel what thin people go through.

Usually, skinny people don’t find themselves fit and healthy; so, they take mass gainers. Mass Gainers are supplements high in carbohydrates and proteins and fill the gap of nutrients in your diet.

Do you know?

Many people get confused between skinny and healthy bodies. BMI (Body Mass Index) helps divide your weight into underweight, normal weight, and overweight.

If your BMI is less than 18.5, then you are skinny or underweight.

No doubt, it has lots of advantages, but it is not free from side effects. In this article, we will discuss the side effects of mass gainers. So, let’s get started.

9 Mass Gainer Side Effects You Should Be Wary Of

Millions of skinny and non-skinny people consume mass gainers to increase weight and boost endurance and energy levels. Well, the problem is this only!

Everyone uses mass gainers—some to lose weight, and some to gain weight—without knowing that mass gainers help in gaining mass.

Such lack of knowledge on mass gainers leads to some severe side effects, which are following:

1. Unhealthy Weight Gain

Unhealthy Weight Gain

Do you know, some mass gainers have high sugar content to increase calories? Yes, you read it right. A lot of manufacturers add a lot of sugar to cut their costs in providing weight-gaining supplements.

Sometimes, due to your lack of knowledge, instead of sugar, they write other forms of sugar such as corn syrup and maltodextrin.

It leads to high calories, and thus you gain weight in an unhealthy way. Unhealthy weight gain can further cause fluctuations in blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

2. Indigestion

Indigestion

Unluckily, the effect of mass gainers on your digestive system is not favorable. It can cause problems such as indigestion, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and bloating.

It is because your stomach is not habitual in taking so many calories and proteins in one take. Also, protein powders contain whey and casein proteins.

Both whey and casein proteins get extracted from milk; means it contains a small amount of lactose. That is why mass gainers become challenging to digest for lactose-intolerant people.

Not only lactose intolerant person, but others also feel it hard to digest mass gainers as they lack fiber contents which can cause constipation and gas.

Tips:

  • For Lactose Intolerant person—Buy mass gainer with low or no lactose content.
  • For others—Buy mass gainer with high fiber content

3. Kidney Problems

Kidney Problems

Mass gainers can affect kidneys in various ways. The kidney is the body organ that helps purify the blood by flushing out all the toxic proteins during the excretion process.

Excess consumption of mass gainers leads to an extra amount of proteins than our body needs. It furthers leads to the production of nitrogenous products.

Our kidneys take too much stress while flushing out too many toxic products, which decreases the capacity of the kidney to function well.

That is why people with kidney problems should avoid the consumption of proteins.

4. Liver Problems

Liver Problems

Mass gainers affect the liver in the same way it affects kidney. Excessive intake of proteins can cause liver problems as it becomes difficult for the liver to metabolize the extra amount of proteins.

A liver breakdown can also happen due to nitrogenous urine. Other than proteins, some mass gainers also contain heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic, leading to liver damage.

5. Dehydration

Dehydration

Hydrating yourself at the workout time is essential, especially when you consume mass gainers.

Mass gainers or protein powder sucks up water from your body at high speed. So, if you consume fluids frequently, you can feel tiredness, dizziness, and weakness immediately.

6. Increases the Risk of Diabetes

Diabetes

As discussed earlier, mass gainers contain high sugar that increases the glucose level in your body; thus, they increase the risk of developing Type-2 Diabetes.

Type-2 Diabetes is the most prevalent and dangerous. We all know, Prevention is better than cure! Once Type-2 diabetes caught you, it is never going to leave you.

Tips:

  • It is best to consume only the dosage recommended by your trainer or doctor.
  • You should always buy mass gainers with less or no sugar content.

7. Breathing Problems

Breathing Problems

Breathing problems such as sneezing, wheezing, coughing, and asthma result from excessive consumption of mass gainers.

Coughing and sneezing often happen to people having allergies to whey. If you are allergic, then you should consult a doctor before using any mass gainers.

Breathing issues can also occur due to a sudden increase in weight caused by mass gainers. Fat people often feel such breathing problems, especially while doing intense activities.

Tips:

  • Avoid consuming mass gainers if you are having breathing problems.
  • Consult with your doctor whether you should resume taking mass gainers or not.

8. Hormonal Imbalances

Surprisingly, mass gainers can also disrupt the hormonal balances in males and females, especially soy protein powders.

In males, soy protein powder affects testosterone levels and decreases sperm production. In females, it can upset the hormonal balance that can develop breast cancer.

9. Ketosis

Excessive consumption of mass gainers can increase the amount of protein in our bodies. But carbohydrates are the primary source of energy.

So, when protein level exceeds the carbohydrate levels, your body will use glycogen stores to produce energy. After glycogen stores, your body goes to fat for energy production.

However, metabolizing fat at the time of low energy produces ketones. Ketones are very toxic for health. A high level of ketones can cause damage to the brain, liver, and kidneys.

You can prevent such side effects by taking the recommended dosage. Always consult your doctor and trainer before deciding to take mass gainers. Also, it’s best if you buy mass gainers after reading the ingredients column on it.
